He chuckled, sliding quarters into the slot. She set the rack and sat on the stool next to the table, sipping water from the bottle he’d taken the liberty of ordering during the last game. The cool liquid soothed her parched throat and her overheated body.

His curse brought her attention back to the table, just in time to see the cue ball trail behind the eleven.

She chuckled. “Problems, dear?”

“Your turn.”

“I gathered.” She picked up her cue from where it rested next to the table and, with a coy glance at him, slid the smooth wood through her palm. His breath hitched and desire made his eyes sparkle.

He strode to the table and rested his cue against the bar stool, then wrapped her in his arms. “You’re playin’ with fire, darlin’.”

She drew her finger down his arm. “Am I?”

He growled at the contact and he pressed her closer to him. She could feel the evidence of his desire against her hip. “Don’t start somethin’ neither of us is ready to finish.”

His warning was clear. She reveled in the knowledge that she affected him as much as he affected her, but she backed off. Of course, neither of them were ready to take that next step. “I believe it’s my turn.”

Without a word Rafe let Kallie go. She took another long pull from the water bottle, then played out her turn at the table.

A few hours later Kallie snuggled into Rafe on his front porch swing.

“You said you were only above average,” Rafe said. “You hustled me, darlin’.”

Kallie smiled into his shoulder. “Yeah, I guess I did.” She looked up at him, her expression sobering. “But I don’t play to cheat anyone, and I never play for money.”

“So, how did you learn to play that well?” he asked in a neutral tone.

She met his gaze, and only saw curiosity. “I had a lot of time on my hands, so I spent it studying the nuances of the game.” She shrugged. “It’s no different than you wanting to play better baseball.”

He was silent for a long moment. “I suppose that’s true.”

“Can we talk about something else, please?” she asked to draw attention away from her pool skills.

“Sure.” He kissed the top of her head. “What do you want to talk about?”

Instead of answering his question, she leaned up and kissed him, telling him with her lips what she couldn’t quite put into words. When Rafe broke off, they were both breathing hard. His fingers threaded into the hair at her nape as he rested his forehead against hers.

Kallie closed her eyes and reveled in the heat that was Rafe Donaldson. She wouldn’t think about leaving in the morning just yet.
